Welcome to Hygge Design

Welcome to my first ever newsletter, something I have wanted to do for so long and have now made the time to focus on. Hygge Design is fortunate to work with many amazing people and we conjure up conversations about all sorts of things, not just design. We have a lot of common interests, that are ultimately linked to our wellbeing, our creativity and how we live in our homes. My newsletter will include a slither of bits and pieces; all the good stuff we are seeing and hearing around us. Hygge and our homes will most certainly be a large feature, but it will be more than that.

The monthly newsletter will include what we are up to here at Hygge Design; from our current projects and their progress; to design trends and interesting homes we are reading about both far and wide. We will touch on what we are reading, cooking, baking and waiting for too; where we wish we could escape to and what we are swooning over- we hope that you can take a little something from us each month and share the hygge design love.

To begin with, I will share my design findings as to what I am reading about over in Denmark. Every month I read a lot – research and gaining inspiration from a range of interests is a big, albeit fun part of my daily routine. One of my favourite reads is RUM ID- an interior design magazine from Denmark. Here is a little snippet from the magazine as to what is going down over in Hygge land.

A darker, warmer palette is moving into scandi interiors, bringing with it an alluring mood dominated by chocolate browns, blacks and stained wood. Since Covid, something more grounded, genuine, and elegant is called for- we are seeing less lighter toned wood, less cool greys and the neutral palette is much warmer- more of a ‘greige’. Relaxed colours are being embraced, hues of blue, that represent an honest aesthetic. Despite the striking palette changes that can be seen in Danish design, quality materials, handmade furniture and classic design have not changed and still reign supreme- iconic Danish designs will never go out of fashion in Denmark.

There are no shortage of new ideas and designs to read about in Scandinavia and one such fab idea is from ‘Superfront’- a brilliant idea whereby the humble IKEA cabinetry is taken to a new level- their new design ‘vertical’ is series of front panels in a new palette of colours. They will seamlessly work with your existing IKEA cabinetry. I am loving the texture and fabulous colour scheme this innovation can bring to a room, at an affordable price point.

Laminex Colour Collection 2021

Moving back home, it was exciting to see Laminex launch their new colour palette yesterday and boy, I am excited! ‘Living Pigments’ offers 7 new solid colours that are welcoming, warm tones. Whilst ‘Calm Character’ presents 10 textural beauties, including Danish walnut that I am quite partial to!

Welcome to Agi at team Hygge Design

I’m thrilled to introduce Agi to you all. Agi has honestly been a breath of fresh air – Agi’s positivity, passion for design and thirst for learning has been truly inspiring to be around. Agi completed her Interior Design degree at RMIT and is very passionate about creating amazing spaces that are harmonious and meaningful, as she really believes that our environment affects our psychological health and wellbeing directly. I couldn’t agree more! I am so excited to work together on our current and upcoming projects, we are both determined to learn, grow and design unique spaces – together we can achieve so much more for our clients. Speaking of current projects, here is a brief note on a handful we are currently working on:

The Esplanade

Demolition has begun and we are patiently waiting for our designs to come alive down The Island. The whole home is getting renovated, including new flooring, exterior, windows, kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. Trades are super busy at the moment, so we are very lucky to have the project in progress. Just across the road from the beach, nature inspired the palette, with lovely greens, texture and organic materials to be seen throughout the home.

Aintree house

We have had a lot of fun experimenting with new materials such as metals for this renovation, which includes kitchen, dining and living areas. Inspired by the high country, this palette includes moody blues and is rich with texture.

Grant house

We are feeling pretty chuffed to be working on this mid-century beauty and bring her back to life for a fun-loving family. We are in the very early stages of the design, but we look forward to sharing our ideas and progress on this one in the months to come.

Mahoney house

Another fun house with great bones- the new roof is on at a height of 2.9m, it will make such a huge difference to the look and feel of the home. New kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, flooring and bespoke joinery is on the cards for this beauty. It shouldn’t be too long until it is completed and ready for our clients to enjoy.

With several other projects at various stages and one commercial job to boot, you can understand my happiness to welcome Agi to Hygge Design. We are so grateful and thrilled to help our valued clients, to create a home they love and that connects to their unique story. We look forward to showing you the variety of projects and ways that one can achieve your best home, for a happier life.

Lusting

Anaca Studio have recently launched their new range of furniture and I am loving the Zola range, honestly it is just so beautiful! Designer Anne-Claire describes The Zola range as a reflection of the “rondeurs”, or curves, that come with living life to the full, amen to that. True to Anaca studio’s ethics, the Zola range is manufactured using sustainable materials. Each unique piece is also made to order in Melbourne.

Dreaming

With Victoria currently experiencing lockdown 4.0, we can only swoon and dream of a getaway! But if we could go away, I think these would be pretty cool places to hygge.

The Tree Hotel – located in Lapland, Sweden, it is an experience like no other, seeing the northern lights, cocooned in a tree house! Sounds perfect to me.

Slow Beam– located in Tasmania, this beautifully curated holiday home is a feast for all the senses- showcasing Australian art and design, it is a unique experience, just outside of Hobart.

Cooking

There is a lot of covid cooking going on at our house- with less to do, there is more time to find joy in cooking for your loved ones. These recipes are a couple on rotation in our home, enjoy.

Reading

I have several piles of books on the go at the one time- I may disturb some of you as I quite enjoy chopping and changing from one to another, with many half-read books scattered around the house! Here are a handful of my current reads:

Drinking

I love a good almond chai and Prana Chai is a wonderful local Cheltenham business that has created a fantastic mix, like a hug in a mug! They have a great gift pack too, the perfect present for any chai lovers out there.

Shopping

Like many of us in lockdown, I bet your online ordering has ramped up again! Elk is a fabulous Australian fashion brand, that always delivers on fun and good quality designs. I may not be seeing any clients at the moment, but when we can, I am ready to go thanks to Elk!

I hope you have enjoyed my first newsletter, please let me know what you would love to see in future newsletters. Until next month, Carlie x
